Mel Hernandez

Council Member

My name is Mel Hernandez; my father was Yaqui, and my mother German Irish. I am an army brat and have lived all over the world. I have taught English and Western Philosophy, while pursuing advance studies in higher education, and most recently, Native American Studies, In short, I have been in higher education most of my life and remain passionate about scholarship and teaching. Lastly,  since 2009, it has been my great privilege to learn from my colleagues working with Michigan Indian Education Council. Currently, at Lansing Community College, where I am employed full-time, I am teaching Angeline Boulley's new novel Warrior Girl Unearthed in my argument courses, and Joy Harjo's When the Light of the World was Subdued, in an advanced Gender and Literature course.
